What I've Learned From Reclaiming My Metabolism

Mar 15, 2024

It’s been almost a year since launching my flagship paid program Reclaim Your Metabolism, and I have learned SO much, not just from my students, but from my own experiences

And it’s NOT about weight loss, which HAS happened.

When I started noticing that my weight was changing along with my sleep habits after I turned 40, I REFUSED to let the old adage “you are getting older” be the reason for this.

I KNEW there had to be something else going on.

There was.

I started tracking my blood glucose levels and was ASTOUNDED at how dysregulated they were.

Especially considering I’m of “typical weight.”

Poor glycemic control means poor insulin control which leads to weight gain and a host of other issues, from poor sleep, to mood issues, to thyroid dysfunction.

There are insulin receptors on every cell of the body.

That should tell you how important it is.

So when I tell you that one of the MOST important keys to health is getting insulin under control, I’m not exaggerating.

Managing this is easier when we are younger–our bodies are just more flexible and adaptable.

But as we cruise around the “hill” of 40 years old, things start to change.

Our years of abusing our bodies begins to catch up with us.

And insulin regulation begins to be impacted.

We talk about ALL of this inside Reclaim Your Metabolism, which is re-opening for enrollment in March (find out all the details here), but today I want to share the results of monitoring and focusing on glucose and insulin that are NOT related to weight.

  1. I hardly notice my period. It’s kinda crazy. It starts, I’m pain-free, and 2-3 days later it’s over.
  2. I don’t crash at 2 or 3pm each day. I used to get SO tired in the afternoon. I started tracking those glucose numbers and noticed that when I felt significant afternoon fatigue, my glucose numbers were sky-high (usually due to a poorly thought-out lunch or sugary coffee). I am now much more mindful of what I’m eating and the order I eat it in (yes, this IS important), and I don’t crash in the afternoon.
  3. I sleep SIGNIFICANTLY better, especially leading up to day one of my menstrual cycle when I used to have severe insomnia and hot flashes.
  4. Fewer eye floaters–can’t really explain this one but some theorize it’s related to diabetes in the eye.
  5. Improved tolerance of gluten and dairy–I do NOT have to avoid these foods anymore! I believe this is more related to the fasting protocol I teach inside RYM, but still a huge win for me!
  6. Improved sugar cravings. I still get them, don’t get me wrong, but they are much more manageable and not distracting in the way they used to be. I noticed when I have elevated blood sugar in the morning, the cravings are much more rampant than when I’m fasting or when I have a savory breakfast.
  7. One of the strangest improvements I’ve noticed is that I’m not cold all the time and my hands are not always ice cold. Generally, this is thought of as a hypothyroid issue, so it may not surprise you when I tell you there is an intricate relationship between thyroid hormone and insulin

That’s a lot of non-weight related benefits from figuring out how to manage my blood sugar.
