Your Diet Didn't Fail You

Feb 08, 2024

I was spending some time scrolling the other day, and I came across a post that was ranting about how this woman was so tired of dieting and failing over and over.

The punch line was "I'm one diet away from living on Girl Scout cookies for the rest of my life."

Isn't that just the culture that we've created.

All of us 80s and 90s babies are the generations that has been so impacted by diet culture: low fat, low carb, low cal, over exercising, Jazzercise, Jane Fonda, Suzanne Somers, Weight Watchers, and more.

Don't those all just conjure up so many memories and emotions?

While our parents' generation was raised on a lot of processed foods, it was primarily before glyphosate came on the scene and back when animals ate foods they were designed to.

They started struggling with their health as they started listening to the gimmicky slogans from Nabisco and thinking that the Crisco and lard their mom's cooked with was somehow now equal to death by poison.

Anyone else remember Snackwells? Oh how I thought those were a healthy treat!

As we've gotten farther away from eating as we were designed to, we've become more overweight, more undernourished, and more frustrated than ever.

The diet industry has failed us. Not YOU.

YOU didn't fail.

You followed guidance that you thought was in your best interest.

My mom has a mantra that I often repeat to myself: "We did the best with what we knew."

Those who oversee food regulation failed us.

Your body however, has operated just as designed.

When we eat 4-6 times PER DAY and focus on low fat "healthy" foods, almost all laden with preservatives and ultra-processed carbohydrates, our bodies will 100% of the time store fat.

Your overexercising and calorie counting to create a caloric deficit will only work if your body is insulin sensitive, which sadly, only 12% of Americans are.

Kinda explains the obesity epidemic, doesn't it? (80% of Americans are now overweight or obese). STAGGERING.

And that insulin sensitivity decreases are we age.

So lots is working against us.

What I coach the women and men I work with on is that the ultimate goal is of course, to get back to eating the foods our body knows how to read, absorb, and use. However, we also live in 2024 when mouth-watering foods are on every TV, at every grocery store, and every restaurant. To be able to resist that 100% of the time is NOT reasonable to expect of our human selves.

So then we must turn to changing something else.

I coach my clients to eat REAL food MOST of the time and then we build in longer breaks between meals.

My mantra is: "Eat less often, not less food."

It works 100% of the time (unless you have a toxicity issue, then we also have to address that).

But even then, if you don't address the insulin issue, the toxicity is hard to get at because your body won't release the toxins.

See why it's good to work with a coach!? It can get confusing and complicated in a hurry and my job is to make it not so by giving you a straight forward plan.

It's why I created Reclaim Your Metabolism.

Insulin is the hidden reason why you aren't losing weight.

It may feel like the trendy thing right now, but it's not. You may also be seeing conflicting information on your favorite social media platform.

Everyone has an opinion as to what is causing our health crisis.

I can tell you this: It's not just one thing that got us here. But if we do NOT address insulin, losing weight will not happen. And then it's really hard to address the other issues like cortisol, parasites, heavy metal toxicity, brain fog, fatigue, etc. ALL which are important to address for long term health. But I find my clients have greater success when hormones (of which insulin is one) are addressed first.

Insulin is often only associated with diabetes, but it starts rearing it's ugly head LONG before. My clients have heard my story many times, but the short story is, I have struggled with insulin resistance since I was a teenager--yet I had NO idea it was what was behind all my health issues until I was 40.5 years old.

Here are some signs that insulin might be something you need to look into:

  • You MUST eat every 2 hours to avoid getting low blood sugar or "hangry" -- (you may also be known as the lady who always snacks)
  • You wake up every night predictably
  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss resistance
  • You lost weight dieting and have had to keep lowering your calorie intake to less and less to keep the weight off
  • You get tired after meals
  • You've been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • You struggled with fertility
  • You have strange discolorations of dark skin somewhere on your body
  • You feel hungry ALL the time, even after a big meal
  • You've been diagnosed with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
  • You have difficult symptoms of perimenopause or PMS
  • You had gestational diabetes with one or more of your pregnancies
  • You have been diagnosed with thyroid issues (hypothyroidism, Hashimotos, etc)

There are some more, like a crazy connection between insulin and reflux. However, these are the main ones. Pretty amazing how many things can be tied back to insulin, which has receptors for it on every cell in the body.

All the supplements and "right foods" will only get you to a certain level of health. Until you address the underlying issue, you'll require more and more supplementation/medication/restrictive diets to keep your health afloat.

Is that what you want?

Not me.

I have experienced every single one of those bullets above (except one) at some point in my life.

As Marie Forleo says: "It's all figureoutable."
